A range of rivers, canals, lakes and fisheries. Fish that bite. And, to top it all, we have a three-day fishing festival which was so popular last year that we’re doing it all again. Shipston-on-Stour & District Angling Club
This friendly and approachable angling club was formed way back in 1953 at Burnley’s Café in New Street Shipston. While the Café is long gone the fishing club is still going strong. In fact, due to the club’s forward thinking and planning it now boasts more than 135 members and this year held 40 contests! More than half of these take place on the club’s own waters.
The club runs angling on seven sections of the river Stour. All have different styles and features. The Upper Stour at Willington is well known for its excellent wild-brown-trout sport, while the rest of the river is better known for its large head of chub, roach and dace. There are also perch, pike, eels, gudgeon and a few carp and tench. The biggest chub tend to get caught at Halford and Honington against the features. There are some big pike to be caught at Honington Bridge!
The club also has three lakes at Aston Magna, which hold a good head of carp, tench, chub, roach and rudd. The first and smallest lake is right of the car park and offers fabulous fishing with no walking at all. The second and middle lake has carp up to 5lb and a large amount of tench and chub. The third and largest lake holds carp up to 16lb and more, plus a shoal of chub that can be seen easily from the raised banks – but are not so easy to catch!
Our lakes are situated in a wooded area surrounded by all manner of fauna, flora and wildlife, which includes deer, fox, badger, owl, kingfisher, heron, robin, red kite, rabbit and wildfowl.
The club is holding its second three-day fishing festival, starting on July 25,2014. This event attracted anglers nationally and proved a huge success last year. The event was sponsored by Bait-Tech and local business and tackle shops. It was also a part of National Fishing Month, set up to encourage juniors and new anglers into the sport, where incentives include free day licences, tuition and advice. A this festival alone, more than 30 new junior anglers signed up.
