Shipston On StourCornerstone of the Cotswolds

THE ARTS and the area – Shipston, music, museums and much more

From music to major collections, pottery to photography, we’ve got it all here. Shipston is home to the famed Shipston Proms, two weeks of musical entertainment catering for all tastes, at different venues around the area and culminating in a major, free outdoor festival in the town centre. But there’s much more musically around here, from live folk, jazz and rock playing in local pubs to lessons, courses and retreats.

The Arts are thriving in and around Shipston-on-Stour. There are a lot of artists working in their own studios in the area. Many have individual or group shows, and also exhibit in the Warwickshire Open Studios event. The area has a vibrant music scene and some of the UK’s major festivals are well within striking distance.

Some of our stately homes are used as Hollywood film sets, while Compton Verney’s galleries hold one of the top three Chinese collections in Europe – ritual funeral vessels dating from the early Shang to the Han dynasties. The nearby Heritage Motor Centre will take you off-road on a thrill ride once you’ve marveled at the history of the automobile and studied first hand Lady Penelope’s pink Thunderbirds FAB 1 car, on show in the collection.

Something for everyone means everyone will find something to fascinate them in our area!

In the early 20th Century the town became known as the centre of the Cotswolds Arts and Crafts Movement, following the move of C. R. Ashbee with the members of his Guild and School of Handicrafts from the East End of London in 1902. A tradition of craft making continues in the town. The Gallery At The Guild is now home for a collection of artists and craft workers. The Robert Welch shop is the outlet for award winning cutlery and tableware.
